Tahiti

Romantics around the world have laid spiritual claim to the islands of Tahiti .  Spread over 5 million square kilometers in the center of the South Pacific Tahiti consists of five island groups, or archipelagos. In all, there are 118 islands, each one with its own charms.  Huahine, Bora Bora, Raiatea, Rangiroa, Tikehau, Manihi, The Marquesas, and the Gambier Islands--all of these are Tahiti.  These pictures, taken by my client Stephen Telfer are of two of the chief islands, Bora Bora and Moorea.

Bora Bora's ancient name, Pora Pora, means "first born"; according to legend this was the first island to rise when Taaroa, the supreme god, fished it out of the waters. Although the initial letter "B" does not exist in the Tahitian language, when Captain Cook first heard the name he mistook the softened sound of the Tahitian "P" for "B" and called the island Bola Bola (apparently mis-hearing the "R" sound as well).

These islands are an artist's paradise. They are volcanic, so there are dramatic views everywhere. Their lagoons resemble a painter's palette with their ranges of blues and greens. Mist-shrouded mountains pierce the sky, their lush, tropical slopes and valleys blossoming with hibiscus.  Palm-covered motu encircle the lagoons like delicate necklaces. Perfect white-sand (some black) beaches give way to emerald waters where colored fish animate the coral gardens as they greet the giant manta rays.

On the human side of things, luxury resorts and spas dot the Islands with over-water bungalows complete with thatched roof villas. The islands are known for these over-water bungalows, and their sitting areas have glass coffee tables with  holes in the floor underneath, so you can watch the fish swimming!

Well-established resorts offer many different opportunities to explore the Islands: you can snorkel and dive through the turquoise lagoons or journey above the lagoon waters by outrigger canoes, wave runners, jet skis, and a Boston Whaler. Or you can enjoy the dramatic sunset cruises aboard a catamaran sailboat.

You can hike or be driven out to panoramic overlooks, accompanied by entertaining local guides.  Or if you prefer more urbane explorations, you can discover Tahiti's famed black pearls, perfumes and oils, and the Islands' beautifully crafted wood carvings.

Early explorers believed they had discovered Heaven when they found Tahiti, and guests over the years have agreed!
